Laikipia

The Laikipia Plateau is a vast expanse of wilderness in the central highlands of Kenya. Covering an area of almost 2 million acres from the foothills of Mount Kenya to Samburu in the North, it is not part of the National Park system. Instead, Laikipia made up of a number of private ranches and community conservancies, interspersed with farmlands.

Laikipia is one of a few areas that have been successful in co-habitation of humans and wildlife. Many private ranches were previously cattle ranches and farms, which were slowly turned over to conservation tourism. As more areas were set aside for conservation, the wildlife has also flourished, and Laikipia now boasts strong populations of wild dogs and roughly half of Kenya’s black rhino population, along with the Big Five.
